Key Liquidation Zones

Price ranges (about 1% wide) with the largest estimated liquidation exposure at the latest time on the heatmap. Short zones sit above the current price, long zones below. % of Total = share of all estimated exposure in the displayed price range. Distance = from the current price to the middle of the zone.

Methodology

Every 5 minutes FMchart measures how open interest changed on each exchange. Open interest counts one side of each contract (every long has a matching short), so when open interest rises both the long side and the short side grow by that amount (plus whatever that side just lost to liquidations). New positions are placed at that price and spread across an assumed leverage mix; each gets a liquidation price of entry × (1 − 1/leverage + maintenance margin) for longs and entry × (1 + 1/leverage − maintenance margin) for shorts. Within one hour, open interest cannot change by more than the volume traded in that hour; where an exchange reports larger swings (Gate), the change used to place new positions is scaled down to that hour's volume. Levels the price later crosses are removed. Each heatmap column shows the levels still open at that time, counting positions opened from a fixed point about 37 days before now (the same for every time range, so the latest column matches across ranges; earlier columns include less history). This is an estimate, not financial advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

1Does the liquidation heatmap show real liquidations?

No. It is an estimate built from open interest changes and an assumed leverage mix. Recorded liquidations are on the Liquidation Tracker page.

2How are the liquidation levels estimated?

Every 5 minutes FMchart measures how open interest changed on each exchange. New positions are placed at that price and spread across an assumed leverage mix; each gets a liquidation price of entry × (1 − 1/leverage + maintenance margin) for longs and entry × (1 + 1/leverage − maintenance margin) for shorts. Levels the price later crosses are removed.

3Why is the open interest change limited by volume?

Within one hour, open interest cannot change by more than the volume traded in that hour. Where an exchange reports larger swings (Gate), the change used to place new positions is scaled down to that hour's volume.

4What does each heatmap column show?

The levels still open at that time, counting positions opened from a fixed point about 37 days before now. The starting point is the same for every time range, so the latest column matches across ranges and earlier columns include less history.

5Which exchanges are included?

Perpetual futures open interest and mark prices from Binance, Bybit, Bitget, Gate, Hyperliquid, Lighter, Kraken and dYdX, plus other exchanges FMchart collects in the All Exchanges totals. Data updates every 5 minutes.
