Axelar interoperability
Axelar uses Gateway contracts and a decentralized validator network to route messages between connected blockchains. Validators collectively control Gateway key shares through multiparty cryptography. The amount of AXL staked with a validator influences its share of this security system.

AXL can be staked with Axelar validators. Validator participation includes block production, voting and multiparty cryptography operations. Staking therefore links AXL ownership with the security of the network's cross-chain infrastructure.
Cobalt tokenomics
Axelar's Cobalt upgrade changed AXL economics. The upgrade sends 98% of Axelar gas fees to a burn address, while 2% goes to a community proposals grant pool. New blockchain connections can also create AXL reward pools from existing supply for verifiers securing those connections.
AXL and cross-chain fees
Axelar abstracts much of the gas complexity from users. Gas services convert source-chain fees into the assets required to complete cross-chain transactions. AXL remains part of this mechanism because Axelar gas fees are denominated and processed through the network's AXL economics.
AXL risks
AXL depends on secure validator operations, connected-chain demand and the reliability of cross-chain infrastructure. Token economics can also change through governance-approved upgrades.
