Volume Bubbles Chart (1h)
Each 1-hour candle's volume is signed by its direction (up candles count as net buying, down candles as net selling) and drawn as a bubble at the closing price, green for buying and red for selling. Bubble size and colour intensity show how strong that flow is compared with the last 300 candles: the strongest 30% get full bubbles with their USD value, the rest stay as small dots. Unusually large bubbles flag aggressive buying or selling worth a closer look, often near breakouts, reversals or key levels.Seasonal Chart
Plots one line per calendar year showing the % change since the start of that year, with the current year highlighted against up to four previous years. Lining the years up on the same calendar shows whether the price tends to rise or fall in the same months, helping you spot recurring seasonal patterns. Treat it as context rather than a forecast: past seasonality does not guarantee future moves.Filecoin Markets
Filecoin Historical Data
About Filecoin (FIL)
Filecoin (FIL) is a peer-to-peer network where people pay independent storage providers to keep their files. It adds financial incentives to IPFS, a system that finds data by its content rather than its location. Most Filecoin nodes also run IPFS. FIL is used to pay for storage, to reward providers and as collateral. On this page, FIL is priced using FMchart's composite, one USD rate combined from several exchanges.
Storage providers and their proofs
Storage providers offer disk space to clients and must lock FIL as collateral. They regularly submit cryptographic proofs showing that they still hold the data they agreed to keep. If a provider fails to deliver those proofs, part of its collateral is burned. That penalty gives providers a strong reason to stay online and keep files intact. Clients therefore do not have to rely on trust alone. In practice, a client can store data with a provider it has never met.
Block rewards and a 2 billion cap
New FIL is minted as block rewards for providers. Up to 770 million FIL can be released through baseline minting, which depends on network performance. Another 330 million comes through simple minting with a six-year half-life. Another 300 million is held in a mining reserve. Providers can use 25% of a reward right away, while 75% vests over 180 days. The hard cap is 2 billion FIL.
Fees and penalties that burn FIL
Not every FIL that is minted stays in circulation. Gas fees, penalties and other mechanisms permanently remove tokens, and Filecoin's documentation says the 2 billion cap will never be reached for that reason. Storage providers also lock large amounts as pledge collateral, sized according to the rewards they expect to earn. Locked and vesting tokens can take a long time to reach the market. Because 75% of each reward vests over six months, sales by providers tend to be spread out rather than happen at once.
Fast finality and Onchain Cloud
Filecoin used to need about 7.5 hours, or 900 epochs, before a block counted as final. Fast Finality, known as F3, activated on mainnet on 29 April 2025 and cut that wait to minutes, a speedup of about 450 times. In March 2026, Filecoin Onchain Cloud went live on mainnet. It is a storage and payments layer where data is verified on-chain and smart contracts enforce payments, with AI agents among its target users. Filecoin says every action on it leaves an auditable record.
Paying demand and competition
Block rewards add new FIL to the market every day, while burns and locked collateral take some out. Filecoin competes with traditional cloud storage and with other decentralized networks on price, speed and ease of use. Storage providers need enough income to keep running, so weak demand or falling prices can shrink the network. FIL's price has been very volatile.

Filecoin (FIL) FAQ
What is Filecoin (FIL)?
Filecoin is a decentralized storage network where clients pay providers in FIL to store data. Providers lock FIL as collateral and must keep proving that they still hold the files, or lose part of that collateral. Supply is capped at 2 billion FIL, and burning removes some of it over time.
What is the difference between Filecoin and IPFS?
IPFS is a protocol for finding and sharing files by their content, but it gives node operators no built-in reason to keep data long term. Filecoin adds that missing incentive. Providers are paid in FIL and put up collateral, and most Filecoin nodes are also IPFS nodes.
How do Filecoin storage providers earn FIL?
Providers earn FIL from clients who pay for storage and from block rewards. A quarter of each block reward is available immediately, and the other 75% vests over 180 days. Providers must also lock FIL as pledge collateral, which can be partly burned if they fail to prove they are storing data.
What is the FIL price today?
FIL is changing hands near $0.8956 on FMchart's composite, a dollar rate pooled from several exchanges. Volume over the last day reached about $11.49M across the exchanges in FMchart's composite. Individual exchanges post their own last trades, which may not match this pooled rate exactly.
How many FIL are in circulation, and is there a cap?
About 838,487,227 FIL circulate today, under a protocol hard cap of 2 billion, while fees and penalties permanently burn some tokens. At the current price, Filecoin's market cap is roughly $751.0M, giving it rank 86. Much of each block reward vests over 180 days before it can be sold.
What was Filecoin's all-time high?
Filecoin peaked at $236.84 on Apr 1, 2021, according to market data. FIL has traded at a small share of that price for much of its later history. The peak is therefore a poor guide to what comes next. The all-time low, and today's distance from both extremes, are in the Price Statistics panel.
How has FIL performed over the months and years?
In FMchart's composite price history (since December 2020), FIL's best month was March 2021 (+430.8%) and its worst was May 2021 (-55.7%). The Monthly Returns (USD) table fills in the months between, and the Annual Price (USD) Change table sums up each calendar year. Filecoin's pattern has been irregular, so no month or year sets an expectation.
What is Filecoin Fast Finality (F3)?
F3 is a protocol upgrade that lets Filecoin finalize blocks in minutes instead of about 7.5 hours. It activated on mainnet on 29 April 2025. Faster finality means apps and users can treat transactions as settled much sooner, instead of waiting hours for certainty.
Is Filecoin a good investment?
This page explains Filecoin but does not recommend buying or selling FIL. Filecoin has a working storage market and new products such as Onchain Cloud. But block rewards add supply daily, competition is strong and providers need paying demand. FIL's price has been very volatile.
What drives the FIL price?
FIL usually follows the broader crypto market. Filecoin-specific drivers include paid storage demand and the amount of FIL locked as collateral or burned in fees. New block rewards, vesting, upgrades and products such as Onchain Cloud matter too. Competition from cloud and other decentralized storage also matters.
