Each line = chain-linked index of the category's tracked coins (current members, weighted by current circulating supply), so coins added later never cause jumps. Default lines: the largest categories by market cap with at least 3 live coins, skipping a category when 80% or more of its market cap is already in the lines shown.

What are crypto categories?
A crypto category groups coins that share a sector, technology or ecosystem — for example layer-1 blockchains, DeFi protocols, meme coins or the coins built on one network. Comparing categories shows which parts of the market are gaining or losing value, not just which single coins move.
FMchart currently tracks 158 categories. The largest by market cap right now are Layer 1, PoW and Bitcoin Ecosystem.
How the numbers are calculated
Prices and percentage changes come from FMchart composite price indices, which combine trades from several exchanges into one USD price per coin. A change over 1 hour, 24 hours or 7 days compares the latest composite price with the composite close at the start of that window.
Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply. 24h volume is the USD value traded over the last 24 hours across the exchanges in the composite.
For a category, market cap and volume are the sums over member coins with live data, and the 1h/24h/7d/30d change is a market-cap-weighted average of those coins. The 7-day chart traces the combined market cap of the category. Coins without live data are listed but not counted.
The category performance chart is a chain-linked index: each step uses only member coins priced at both ends of the step, weighted by current circulating supply, so a coin added later or a data gap never creates a jump. MCap Share is the category market cap divided by the total market cap of tracked coins; categories overlap, so shares do not add up to 100%.
How to use this page
Click a column header to sort the table, type in the search box to filter by name, and tick “Hide categories without data” to show only categories with live prices. Open a category to see its coins. The performance chart compares the largest categories over the range you pick; click a legend item to hide or show a line. The bubble chart colours each category by its change over the timeframe you pick and sizes it by the measure you choose; hover a bubble for details and click it to open the category.
Frequently asked questions
How is a category's market cap calculated?
It is the sum of the market caps of the category's member coins that have live FMchart data. A coin can belong to several categories, so category market caps overlap and should not be added together.
How is a category's 24h change calculated?
It is the market-cap-weighted average of the 24-hour price change of the member coins with live data, so larger coins move the category more than smaller ones.
Why does a category show fewer live coins than members?
Only coins with a live FMchart composite price are counted in the statistics. The other members are still listed on the category page, with a dash instead of numbers.
