How Relative Volume (RVOL) is calculated

Relative Volume (RVOL)

RVOL = volume of a candle ÷ average volume of the same timeframe. An RVOL of 1.00 means the candle traded exactly its usual volume; 2.00 means twice the usual volume; 0.50 means half. Volume Deviation = (RVOL − 1) × 100 %.

Average Volume and lookback

Average Volume is the arithmetic mean of the volume of the closed candles of the same timeframe inside the lookback window before the candle; the candle itself is never part of its own average. Lookback options: 7D, 14D, 30D (default 7D).

Minimum of 20 candles

An average needs at least 20 closed candles. When the lookback is too short for the timeframe it is extended automatically and the page says so (1D uses at least 20 days, 1W at least 20 weeks). A coin with fewer than 20 candles of history in the window shows N/A, never an estimate.

Live (provisional) candle

The running candle is drawn hatched and labelled Live (provisional). Its RVOL compares the volume so far with the average scaled to the elapsed part of the candle, and is shown only after 5 % of the candle has passed. The live value changes until the candle closes and is never used in the ranking; RVOL (Current) always uses the last closed candle.

Volume unit and source

All volumes are in USD: FMChart composite spot volume from the exchanges FMChart collects, not the total volume of the whole market. Volume Change (24H) compares the last full 24 hours with the 24 hours before (hourly candles); Volume Rank (24H) ranks the coin by 24-hour volume among the ranked coins. Stablecoins are excluded from the ranking. All times are UTC.

RVOL is not a trading signal

A high RVOL only says that more volume than usual is trading. It is not bullish or bearish by itself and is not a buy or sell signal: heavy volume can come with rising or falling prices. Use it to find where activity is unusual, together with price and other context.

Frequently asked questions

What is Relative Volume (RVOL)?

RVOL compares the volume of a candle with the average volume of the same timeframe over a lookback period. RVOL = candle volume ÷ average volume, so 1.00 is normal activity, above 1 is busier than usual and below 1 is quieter than usual.

How is the average volume calculated?

It is the arithmetic mean of the closed candles of the same timeframe in the lookback window (7D, 14D, 30D) before the candle, excluding the candle itself, with at least 20 candles; shorter windows are extended automatically.

What does Live (provisional) mean?

It is the RVOL of the candle that is still running, based on the volume so far and the elapsed part of the candle. It changes until the candle closes and is not used for RVOL (Current) or the ranking.

Is a high RVOL bullish or bearish?

Neither. RVOL measures how unusual the trading activity is, not its direction. A volume spike can happen in a rally or in a sell-off, so it is not a buy or sell signal.

Which volume does FMchart use?

FMChart composite spot volume in USD from the exchanges FMChart collects. It is not the total volume of the whole crypto market.
